Curtis Drake doesn't make bowl trip
By Brian Bennett
Penn State will be without four players for its TicketCity Bowl game against Houston, among them receiver Curtis Drake, who was involved in a locker-room fight earlier this month, interim coach Tom Bradley said Tuesday.
Drake, who fought with starting quarterback Matt McGloin after a Dec. 17 practice, did not make the trip for "personal reasons," Bradley said.
Drake has five catches for 102 yards and also played a key role as quarterback in the Wildcat formation during a Nov. 19 win at Ohio State. Bradley said receiver Shawney Kersey also did not make the bowl trip because of personal reasons.
Penn State also won't have backup quarterback Paul Jones or reserve cornerback Derrick Thomas for Monday's game because of academic reasons. Jones did not play at all this season because he was academically ineligible, but he had been practicing with the team this month in hopes that he would be available to play in the bowl game.
The Nittany Lions' quarterback situation is still unresolved. McGloin, who suffered a concussion in that fight with Drake, did not practice Tuesday at a Dallas-area high school and is being evaluated by the medical staff, Bradley said.
Sophomore Rob Bolden would start if McGloin cannot play.
