PHILADELPHIA -- Chicago Blackhawks forward Daniel Carcillo could face surgery on his injured left knee after he completes his seven-game suspension for boarding Edmonton's Tom Gilbert.

"It's always a possibility when you have an injury," general manager Stan Bowman said Thursday before his team took on the Philadelphia Flyers.

Carcillo was injured on the play he earned his suspension, nailing Gilbert into the boards and then falling awkwardly to the ice.

"We're still trying to assess what we're going to do there,'" Bowman said. "It's undetermined right now. The best course of action we should know soon. With injuries sometimes you have to decide is rehab going to get it to where it needs to go or not. We're not there yet."

Bowman said he's been attending the World Juniors tournament in Canada but will talk with team doctors for the best course of action. Carcillo will start his suspension Thursday against the Flyers and will be eligible to play again on Jan. 18 against Buffalo, if he's healthy.

Asked if he agreed with the length of Carcillo's suspension, Bowman said: "I certainly can't complain about it. I respect the decision. We move forward and put it behind us.'"
