The social media buffet is a plentiful one nowadays, overflowing with opportunities to learn the latest from athletes, celebrities, friends, and total strangers. Want to know what your favorite pro skier is eating for breakfast? Yep, you can find that out in real time.

Perhaps it's because of the abundance of frivolous status updates these days that Instagram -- the filtered-photo sharing social media app -- feels like such a refreshing break. Many of the images, despite the fact that they're taken with phones and not proper cameras, are artfully composed and beautifully captured. It is about quality, not quantity and offering a rare, in-the-moment perspective.
