When Sergio Martinez battles Matthew Macklin at New York's Madison Square Garden Theater on Saturday, the matchup seems to have all the elements to become a highly entertaining event -- possibly even a fight of the year candidate. Both fighters have the style and tools to keep the bout interesting over the 12-round distance, as each has proven in his most recent fights. Last June, Macklin (28-3, 19 KOs) wound up on the short end of the stick in his first title shot, against Felix Sturm, although the Irishman submitted a fantastic effort (and, some believe, received a raw deal). Meanwhile, Martinez (48-2-2, 27 KOs) dominated Darren Barker in the second half of their fight last October, the second defense of his linear middleweight championship, to set up this St. Patrick's Day tangle. The high punch outputs of both fighters promise an action-packed bout -- just one of the many variables in play during this terrific matchup.
