CHICAGO -- Free-agent quarterback Caleb Hanie is scheduled to visit the Denver Broncos Wednesday, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Entering his fifth NFL season, Hanie, who played at Colorado State, started four games down the stretch for the Chicago Bears last season in place of injured starter Jay Cutler. One of those starts came against the Broncos, when Hanie completed 12 of 19 passes for 115 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and a quarterback rating of 79.9 in a 13-10 loss Dec. 11. Hanie was replaced by Josh McCown for the final two regular-season games. The Bears decided not to re-sign Hanie and instead landed former starter Jason Campbell in free agency to serve as Cutler's primary backup. The club also brought back McCown on a one-year deal, and he will enter training camp as the No. 3 quarterback. With Denver reportedly looking to trade Tim Tebow, the Broncos need to address their depth at quarterback behind new starter Peyton Manning. Denver also is scheduled to host veteran Billy Volek.
