O's put Alfredo Simon on waivers
ESPN.com news services
The Baltimore Orioles placed pitcher Alfredo Simon on outright waivers, sources told MLB.com and The Baltimore Sun on Friday.
Dan Duquette, the Orioles' executive vice president of baseball operations, told both outlets that information about the waiver process is confidential and that Simon currently remains on the 40-man roster. The right-hander will remain on the roster until he clears waivers or a team claims him. The Baltimore Sun reported that the team is not expected to make an announcement until that time.
Simon has been both a starter and a reliever for the O's, making 16 starts while appearing in 23 games last season. Overall, he went 4-9 with a 4.90 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP in 2011.
This spring, the 30-year-old suffered a groin strain in a March 18 start against the Yankees and had to leave the game. He came back Wednesday, appearing in relief, only to allow six runs on six hits in two innings.
A National League executive told The Baltimore Sun he expected Simon to be claimed off waivers. "You definitely take a chance on an arm like that," he told the paper.
Both MLB.com and The Baltimore Sun reported that the Orioles likely will add catcher Ronny Paulino and first baseman Nick Johnson to the 40-man roster before the 5 p.m. ET deadline Wednesday. Waiving Simon makes room for one of those players.
