Under-17/18 Academy Rankings

By Sheldon Shealer

Late season losses sometimes lead to surprising changes in the rankings. Take this week, for example. The previous No. 9 team lost, allowing a team that tied to move up a spot and a team that was idle to crack the top 10.

The lone newcomer this week is the South Carolina United Battery, leaders of the Southeast Division.

The spot opened up when the Vancouver Whitecaps sustained a 4-0 loss to a red-hot Crossfire team. Crossfire, which just completed a three-game sweep of top programs in the West, would have warranted a top 10 spot, except the team's 12-8-6 mark has it on the fringes of even making the playoffs.

All 10 teams in the ESPNHS Development Academy Under-17/18 Power Rankings are firmly in the playoff picture. Therefore, the Battery gets the nod for now. Also benefitting from Vancouver's loss was FC DELCO, which inched higher from No. 10 to No. 9 this week.

Throughout the rest of the season, ESPNHS will offer a weekly glance at the top 10 teams in each age group.

It should be noted, these rankings are not predictive, but rather reactive to the results. In other words, the higher ranked team has accomplished something on the field to earn that position for now. As such, we expect quite a bit of turnover in the top 10 -- especially the bottom three to five spots -- throughout the rest of the Development Academy season.

2011-12 US Soccer Development Academy Power Rankings: Under-17/18
Chicago Fire

Last Week: 1
The Chicago Fire has already clinched one of the two Great Lakes Division playoff spots and is nearing an undefeated run through league play.
Next Match: June 2 vs. FC Milwaukee
Sockers FC
Last Week: 4
The Sockers have a mathematical chance of catching the Chicago Fire in the Great Lakes race, but likely will have to settle for second since it's currently 10 points behind with five matches left.
Next Match: June 2 vs. Chicago Magic PSG
Shattuck-St. Mary's

Last Week: 3
Ricardo Lopez-Espin and John Lujano scored to lead Shattuck-St. Mary's to a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City. The result clinched a playoff berth and all but seals the Frontier Division title.
Next Match: June 9 vs. Real Colorado
FC Dallas

Last Week: 4
FC Dallas' 22 wins leads all teams in the Academy. However, two losses in its last three outings bumped the squad from the top of the rankings for now.
Next Match: June 2 vs. Texas Rush

Last Week: 5
PDA was idle while the club's girls teams played host to one of the nation's top youth tournaments. This week, PDA returns to action against Met Oval.
Next Match: June 2 vs. Met Oval
NY Red Bulls

Last Week: 6
The Red Bulls are chasing Albertson and PDA in the Liberty Division, but has a leg up on Albertson. The Red Bulls are a point behind its New York rival but has played two fewer matches.
Next Match: June 2 vs. New York Cosmos Academy
Baltimore Bays Chelsea

Baltimore Bays Chelsea received goals from three players in a 3-0 win over state and league rival Potomac. The two teams meet again this weekend and the Bays could come close to sealing the division title.

Drew Murphy scored a pair of goals to spark LA Galaxy's 5-1 win over Arsenal. The result moved the LA Galaxy back to first place in the SoCal Division.
Next Match: June 2 vs. Nomads
Last Week: 10
A scoreless tie with PA Classics generally wouldn't warrant a move up, but a 4-0 loss by former No. 9 Vancouver created opportunity for the Mid-Atlantic Division second-place team.
Next Match: June 2 vs. Match Fit Chelsea
South Carolina United
Last Week: NR
The South Carolina United Battery holds a narrow lead over Concorde Fire in the Southeast Division, but it's good enough to warrant a No. 10 ranking this week.
Next Match: June 9 vs. Weston FC
