Report: Chargers eye Brian Banks

ESPN.com news services

Add the San Diego Chargers to the list of teams interested in Brian Banks.

Sources told the San Diego Union-Tribune on Friday that the Chargers are one of the five teams interested in holding a tryout for Banks, who last month was exonerated of a rape conviction that put him in prison for five years.

On Thursday, Banks was offered a formal tryout by the Seattle Seahawks during their mandatory offseason minicamp next week. He has yet to accept the invite.

Banks also was to work out for the Washington Redskins on Friday.

The sources told the Union-Tribune that Banks could travel to San Diego and work out for the Chargers this weekend before heading to Seattle for its tryout if he chooses to accept it.

Before the charges, Banks was a star middle linebacker at Long Beach Polytechnic High School and was attracting interest from college football powerhouses such as USC, Ohio State and Michigan. He said he had agreed to a full scholarship with the Trojans.

His college football dreams ended, however, when he pleaded no contest to a childhood friend's false accusation of rape in 2002, a claim she now has recanted.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
