NEW YORK -- Reigning world marathon champion Edna Kiplagat of Kenya has won the New York Mini 10K race in Central Park.

Kiplagat, who won the 2010 New York City Marathon, surged at the 4-mile mark to finish in 32 minutes, eight seconds on Saturday. Aheza Kiros of Ethiopia was second in 32:18, followed by Hilda Kibet of the Netherlands in 32:34.

Kiplagat says she's using the race to work on her speed training ahead of the London Olympics.

Stephanie Rothstein was the top U.S. finisher at sixth in 33:04. U.S. Olympic Marathon team member Desiree Davila finished 11th in 33:38.

About 6,000 runners participated in the 40th anniversary of the all-female road race.

The inaugural event featured 78 participants. On hand Saturday were Mini 10K co-founders Kathrine Switzer and Nina Kuscsik and 1972 champion Jacqueline Dixon.
