Steinberg tops 2,795 to win $440,238

At age 23, Max Steinberg has taken the poker world by storm and at the 2012 World Series of Poker, he defeated the field of 2,795 players in the $1,000 no-limit hold 'em Event 33 to win his first WSOP bracelet. Steinberg turned his $1,000 buy-in into $440,238, his largest career tournament score, as he defeated Samuel Gerber heads-up for the title.

Max Steinberg
Max Steinberg turned $1,000 into $440,238 and his first WSOP Bracelet in Event 33.

As Steinberg celebrated his win, he understood Gerber's pain of coming close. It was only two years ago that Steinberg was in the runner-up spot, staring across the table as his opponent Pascal Lefrancois earned his first bracelet. Unfortunately for Gerber, this was the second time he'd finish second.

"I got second two years ago, and I really, really wanted that bracelet," said Steinberg to the WSOP. "And it just felt good to, you know, play really well at the final table and get it in good and win, feeling like I was the best player there. … Someone asked me if I felt extra pressure because I had gotten second before. It was actually the opposite. Like, no pressure at all."

Steinberg played through a tough final table with a calmness and positive attitude that can be attributed to his focus on meditation. The former online professional poker player and short-handed specialist proved his chops as the nine-handed final table was reduced to the final few players. After a four-hour battle three-handed, Steinberg had put himself in a great position to win, but one major hurdle stood in his way.

Tournament regular Matt Stout was the man who seemed destined to win this bracelet. Stout moved into the chip lead shortly after the start of three-handed play by doubling through Steinberg with A-10 to Steinberg's 2-2. Stout's lead grew, mostly at the expense of Gerber, but the tables turned quickly. Gerber doubled through Stout three times in less than half an hour and then watched as Steinberg took his final few chips to eliminate him in third. Stout earned $192,813 in his 22nd WSOP cash.

Steinberg didn't have the chip lead, but he had the edge in experience. When he played online, he focused on the heads-up sit-and-gos and this was simply just another match. After earning the chip lead and tactfully breaking down the Swiss pro's game, he enticed Gerber to move all-in after the flop with 4-10 on a K-4-3 board. Steinberg instantly called with 10-10 and watched with excitement as the turn and river blanked.

The victory gives Steinberg more than $1 million in lifetime tournament earnings. Since he's no longer able to play online, Steinberg has been playing in more live tournaments, but feels he'll move on eventually.

"I don't know how much longer I'll be playing poker," he said. "But I think that I do get excited playing live poker. Maybe I'm not yelling or screaming, but I do enjoy myself. … I was really excited for the WSOP, because it was a chance to play poker every day again and just see what I can do. We'll see what my future holds. I'm not really sure what it's going to be, though."

Other notable finishers included Faraz Jaka (34th), Humberto Brenes (148th), Erik Seidel (153rd) and Jonathan Duhamel (260th).
