Long Beach, N.Y.
Surfers in Long Beach, N.Y., showed their true colors on the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11. May we never forget those who sacrificed to make this country great.

What kind of Americans are surfers?

Hard to say. We're not really a homogeneous group within this country that you can label one way or another. Many conscious folks go left on every wave and then there are waterborne champions of individual liberty. Among us are shortboard shredders who praise Obamacare and crusty longboarders who loathe anything that resembles socialism. There are environmental activist Republicans and folks who live in their vans, surf all day and cash unemployment checks. We're all over the board.

But we're all Americans. And this weekend, most will sweat over a hot grill watching the burgers [veggie and beef] burn. We will enjoy corn, apple pie, melting ice cream and warm kegs. And some will work double shifts. Since we all live near the coast, where nearby cities will unload their sweating legions upon us, this is just another money day in a short summer.

But we'll all be hoping for waves. And somewhere between the fruit salad, getting to table six and the town fireworks, we should think about our nation's independence. Happy Fourth of July.
