Brian Roberts has a tear in his right hip labral, the latest in a long list of injuries to plague the Baltimore Orioles' second baseman.
The Baltimore Sun reported Friday that Roberts will seek a second opinion from a hip specialist in Atlanta. The injury was discovered after the 34-year-old Roberts underwent an MRA on Thursday. Surgery likely will be needed, according to the Sun.
"I traded texts with (Roberts) back and forth, obviously a little depressed about the physical issue," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said before Friday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif. "We were hoping to get better news. ... I feel sorry for Brian. He worked so hard to get back to this point, to have something else crop up, it's frustrating for him."
Roberts has played in just 115 games since the beginning of the 2010 season. He missed close to 13 months while recovering from multiple concussions but returned to the Orioles on June 12.
He was hitting .182 with two runs scored and five RBIs before Baltimore placed him on the disabled list Tuesday with what the team called a sore groin.
