TCU officially hired Randy Shannon as the team's linebackers coach Thursday.

Shannon, the head coach at Miami from 2007-10, takes the spot vacated by Tony Tademy, who resigned a few weeks ago.

Shannon spent last season as an analyst at ESPN and traveling to a handful of programs to learn about how they operated as he kept himself involved in college football. He decided he was ready to return and does so as a member of Gary Patterson's TCU staff. The Horned Frogs begin play in the Big 12 for the first time this season.

Shannon, who was fired after Miami lost to South Florida to end the 2010 season, went 28-22 in four seasons with the Hurricanes, including three bowl appearances. He was the school's defensive coordinator for six seasons before getting the top job.

Shannon, a Miami native, does have ties to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 and became the first rookie to start at outside linebacker for the Cowboys since 1963. He played just two seasons with Dallas before entering the coaching profession.
