NEW YORK -- New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano is day to day with a stiff neck, manager Joe Girardi said after his team's 3-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.

"We tried to see if we could get him ready to play," Girardi said of Cano, who missed the game because of the injury. "Hopefully, he'll be ready to play tomorrow. If not, we'll give him one more day and he's day by day."

Girardi wasn't concerned about Cano's neck.

"No. Guys sleep wrong sometimes," Girardi said. "We get a win without him. It probably doesn't hurt him to have an off day, either. It might play an important role as the season moves on."

Cano, 29, is batting .311 with 25 home runs and 68 RBIs in 116 games for the Yankees this season.

Jayson Nix started in Cano's absence on Wednesday night and went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
