David Ortiz won't play vs. Yanks
By Gordon Edes
NEW YORK -- David Ortiz was pain-free Friday after shutting down for five days, Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said, and Ortiz took batting practice, but Valentine ruled him out of playing this weekend.
"He might run a little and do some things to test it," Valentine said of the strained right Achilles that has now sidelined Ortiz for more than a month (he went on the DL July 17).
The Red Sox are 12-17 in the 29 games that Ortiz has missed. They are averaging almost a half-run less per game (4.6) than before he was hurt (5.0), and the team's OPS is .753, compared with .771 prior to the injury.
The Red Sox have hit 28 home runs in Ortiz's absence; they had 104 in the 90 games in which he played.
