BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox announced Thursday night that outfielder Carl Crawford's reconstructive elbow surgery was a success. Dr. James Andrews performed the Tommy John surgery on Thursday in Pensacola, Fla.

The Red Sox released the following statement: "Carl Crawford underwent a successful left elbow ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (Tommy John surgery) today and we expect him to make a full recovery."

Boston's left fielder first suffered the injury during spring training when he was rehabbing from offseason wrist surgery, which was performed last January. He missed the first half of the season before being activated on July 16.

He finished the season with a .282 average with 10 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 19 RBIs in only 31 games.
