Virginia Tech receiver D.J. Coles will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, the school announced Thursday.

Coles hurt his right knee in the first quarter in an overtime win over Georgia Tech on Monday night and did not return to the game.

It is a devastating blow for Coles, considering he had offseason surgery on the same knee. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.

Coles will be eligible to apply for a medical hardship waiver for an additional year of eligibility. He has not redshirted, so if the waiver is granted, he will be able to return for a fifth season in 2013.

Hokies trainer Mike Goforth said in a statement released by the university that he is almost certain that Coles will be granted the waiver.

Coles has played in 37 career games, starting three. He was the team's top returning player in terms of receptions after catching 36 passes for 480 yards and three touchdowns last season.
