Darrelle Revis placed on IR
By Jane McManus
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Coach Rex Ryan said Darrelle Revis will have surgery on his torn ACL on Thursday, and the Jets placed the cornerback on season-ending injured reserve.
"I know I had said before about Darrelle that I'd like to wait for him to have surgery before we placed him on IR or not," Ryan said Friday. "Unfortunately with that time situation, you've had Eric Smith being out this week, we're going to need that roster spot."
Smith sprained a knee in practice Thursday, and the safety will miss Sunday's game against Indianapolis.
To fill Revis' roster spot, the Jets signed rookie safety Antonio Allen, the team's seventh-round draft pick, off the practice squad.
Allen was waived after the preseason on Sept. 1, but the Jets signed him to the practice squad the next day. In four seasons at South Carolina, Allen had 198 tackles, including 20 for a loss, four interceptions and six forced fumbles.
The Jets delayed putting Revis on IR on the slim chance that he could return from surgery and be able to play in Super Bowl XLVII in February, should the Jets be able to get there.
"When I said it was a 0.002 percent chance? Well, it's not that high," Ryan said. " ... I was holding out hope but the more information we got, I realized that wouldn't be good for Darrelle, either."
Revis was in the team's facility Friday walking on a zero-gravity treadmill. Ryan had indicated that doctors wanted to strengthen the knee before Revis underwent surgery.
Receiver Santonio Holmes had surgery on his foot Wednesday, and Ryan said doctors were optimistic afterward. Ryan expects to have Holmes back for the Jets' offseason training program.
Also, linebacker Josh Mauga had surgery Friday to repair a torn pectoral muscle.
