COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Blue Jackets have lost defenseman Ryan Murray, their top pick from this year's NHL draft, for the season before a game has even been played.
Murray, picked second overall by the Blue Jackets in June, will have shoulder surgery in the next two to three weeks and will need six months to recover, the club announced Tuesday. Murray, 19, suffered the injury while playing for the Western Hockey League's Everett Silvertips in a game Nov. 16.
It also is a big loss for Canada's national junior team ahead of the world juniors next month in Russia. Murray won bronze with Canada at last year's tournament.
He had 17 points (2-15) in 23 games with Everett this season.
