Supermodel Sunset

Keanu Asing
Keanu Asing had this unreal freefall, but failed to advance out of the round of 64 Friday.

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4

Sunset was gorgeous yesterday for the Van's World Cup of Surfing. A new north swell combined with variable winds made the long, high performance wave look like a supermodel. She was all done up, curvy and tall with barreling 6- to 8-foot waves for the Round of 96 at this ASP Prime event.

And like a supermodel, Sunset broke hearts and inspired those trying to court her Friday. Keanu Asing, Alex Ribero, Wiggolly Dantas and Brian Toth were eliminated, and their hopes of making the World Championship Tour turned into reality checks of a 2013 qualifying campaign.

Nat Young
"I can't control what anybody else does, so for me it's just surfing good and making heats," said Nat Young.

Others such as Nathaniel Curran, Tanner Gudauskas, Nathan Yeomans and Granger Larsen advanced to the next round of competition with their World Tour qualification hopes still intact.

Californian Nat Young needs to make one more heat to mathematically solidify his place on the 2013 Dream Tour. The 21-year-old from Santa Cruz won his heat Friday with a two-wave total of 11.44 out of a possible 20 points.

"This contest is really important for me. It's the last opportunity I have to add points [to my world ranking] so I'm trying to take advantage of that and add as many points as I can," said Young, who rode a 6-6. "I can't control what anybody else does, so for me it's just surfing good and making heats."

Jay Thompson
Big Jay Thompson found the waves well-suited for his size and approach.

Hawaiian Billy Kemper had a solid day, putting up the highest score with a frontside barrel for a 17-point heat total. Jay Bottle Thompson, who claims that Sunset is built for a surfer with a bigger frame, put up a 16.56-point total of his own.

Another goofyfoot on the cusp of 2013 qualification is the North Shore's Fred Patacchia Jr. Like Young, Patacchia also rode a 6-6 and sat wide, picking off the medium-sized waves. The 30-year-old's vertical backhand attack was on display, earning a 12.66 two-wave total and advancing to the Round of 64. He explained that goofyfooters are at a disadvantage when it's barreling because backside tube riding at Sunset is such a challenge.
