Julian Edelman done for season

The New England Patriots put receiver Julian Edelman on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday and officially announced the re-signing of Donte' Stallworth.

Edelman has a broken foot and likely needs surgery, according to multiple reports. He was injured in the second half of the Patriots' 23-16 win over the Dolphins on Sunday and was seen leaving Sun Life Stadium with the aid of crutches and wearing a protective boot.

He had carved a role as the team's third wide receiver and was playing his best football of the season before the injury. Edelman scored a special-teams touchdown in consecutive games in November, including a Week 11 punt return for a score against the Colts.

He served as the Patriots' primary punt returner, a role that could now fall to Wes Welker.

Edelman, now in his fourth NFL season, is in the final year of his contract, and the injury is likely to affect his free-agent status in the offseason.

To beef up the wide receiving core, the team re-signed Stallworth. This marks the third time he's been signed by the Patriots and the second time this season. Stallworth was released at the conclusion of training camp after being added this past offseason in free agency. He also had played on the team in 2007.
