Between events promoted by Zuffa and Bellator, 31 fights went down over the weekend. That number should have been 33; however, late postponements due to the unforeseen meant Marcin Held could not fight Dave Jansen in Bellator (because of an age issue) and Jamie Varner had to be scratched instead of fighting Melvin Guillard (because of illness).
As it was, the weekend produced more than its share of finishes, particularly Saturday in Las Vegas during the finale for season 16 of "The Ultimate Fighter." Part of the reason the card delivered nine finishes over the course of 11 fights was the size of the cage.
The venue required a smaller Octagon, which ensured fighters couldn't take more than two steps without engaging or having their back to the fence. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. If there ever comes a point where the trend is for stalling and slow fights, tightening the dimensions of the Octagon is surely an easy remedy.
No matter the size of the space in which they fought, fighters listed in this week's report card all left the cage winners, some very impressively.
