Shani Davis wins World Cup race

CALGARY, Alberta -- American Shani Davis won the 1,000-meter World Cup speedskating race Saturday, edging Dutch skaters Kjeld Nuis and Michael Mulder.

Davis, the world-record holder in the event, finished with a time of 1 minute, 7.49 seconds -- 0.15 ahead of Nuis. Mulder was another 0.23 back.

Jan Smeekens of The Netherlands won the 500 in 34.32 to set a Dutch record. Mika Poutila of Finlad finished second in 34.361, and Canada's Jamie Gregg was third in 34.369.

American Heather Richardson won the women's 1,000 and finished second in the 500. Richardson had a time of 1:13.09 in the 1,000 -- 0.58 ahead of Canadian world record-holder Christine Nesbitt. Fellow American Brittany Bowe was third in 1:13.91.

Sang-Haw Lee of Korea just missed the world record in the 500 with a time of 36.99. Richardson was 0.13 back, and current world record holder Jing Yu of China was third in 37.28.
