Glabart poised to win Vendee Globe in record time
LES SABLES D'OLONNE, France -- French sailor Francois Gabart is set to win the Vendee Globe solo around-the-world yacht race in record time.
The 29-year-old Gabart is the youngest skipper competing in the seventh edition of the race. He's expected to reach the finish in western France early Sunday in his yacht MACIF.
Frenchmen Armel Le Cleac'h and Jean-Pierre Dick are second and third, respectively.
Gabart had been at sea for just over 77 days and was about 430 nautical miles from finishing, meaning he is set to smash two-time winner Michel Desjoyeaux's course record of 84 days, 3:09:08 in 2009. Desjoyeaux is not competing this year.
When Gabart crossed the equator line on Jan. 15, he was already more than five days ahead of Desjoyeaux in 2009.
