ESPN.com news services
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings will play in the Winter Classic next season, according to the Toronto Star.
The newspaper also reported that the NHL is nearing a deal with the University of Michigan to host the game at its football stadium in Ann Arbor.
"My guess is we will officially announce plans in early spring," a source told the Star.
The Leafs and Red Wings were scheduled to play in the 2013 Winter Classic on Jan. 1, at "The Big House." However, the NHL's annual outdoor showcase was canceled in November due to the lockout. Tickets for the 2013 game will be honored for the one in '14, the league announced at the time.
According to the Star, the 2014 Winter Classic again will include several events leading up to the Leafs-Red Wings game, including AHL, OHL and college matchups. The newspaper reported that the NHL again is in talks with Comerica Park, home of baseball's Detroit Tigers, to help host the festivities.
Before the 2013 Winter Classic was canceled, the NHL had planned to build rinks at both "The Big House" and at Comerica to accommodate all the events.
