Perhaps fed up with high school flameouts, the NBA institutes its "one-and-done" rule, stating that a player cannot be drafted to the NBA unless he is 19 years old and one year out of high school.

Lance Armstrong wins his seventh straight Tour de France and then retires. A French newspaper reports that Armstrong failed a drug test and took a blood enhancer EPO, which he denies vigorously.

Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina wreaks havoc on New Orleans, leaving hundreds dead or homeless, and rips a hole in the Super Dome. The New Orleans Saints become vagabonds and the NBA's Hornets are forced to play their next two seasons in Oklahoma City.
