Chandler left Wednesday's loss to the Nuggets late in the first half after banging knees with Denver's Corey Brewer. Chandler was helped off the floor by teammates and could not put weight on the knee. He originally was called "probable" by coach Mike Woodson.
On Thursday, Woodson clarified to say the decision to play would rest with Chandler.
With Carmelo Anthony also sidelined with a knee injury, Woodson turned to Chris Copeland, Kurt Thomas and Kenyon Martin to start on the Knicks' front line against Portland.
Chandler's status for Sunday's game against the Clippers is unclear at this point.
He suffered a bone bruise on his left knee in the Knicks' final preseason game but returned to play in New York's season opener eight days later.
The first-time All-Star had played in every regular-season game this season prior to Thursday.
