Watson, speaking on RyderCup.com, said the points system for players to qualify will remain the same. He consulted several recent captains about changing the number of picks.
"There's not a lot of method in my madness, if you will," said Watson, 63, who will be the oldest U.S. Ryder Cup captain in history. "I truly think the players themselves ought to have another shot at getting on the team because of ... their play." The first points for the U.S. squad start accruing at the Masters in April and will be awarded for the major championships this year. Points for every tournament will start with the Frys.com Open in the fall.
