Gavin Schilling commits to Spartans
By Scott Powers
Findlay Prep (Nevada) senior center and Chicago native Gavin Schilling committed to Michigan State via Twitter on Wednesday.
Schilling, a 6-foot-9, 235-pound center, committed to the Spartans over UCLA, Minnesota and Villanova. Schilling is ranked 16th in Illinois and 21st at his position by ESPN.
The 17-year-old attended Loyola in Wilmette, Ill., as a freshman, lived in Germany as a sophomore, transferred to De La Salle in Chicago as a junior and played at Findlay Prep in Nevada as a senior. He helped Findlay Prep to a 34-0 record this season.
Schilling played for the Mac Irvin Fire with Simeon's Jabari Parker and Whitney Young's Jahlil Okafor during the club season last year.
"His upside is unbelievable," Mac Irvin Fire coach Mike Irvin said Wednesday. "Really, he's supposed to be a junior in high school. He's younger than everyone in high school. Potentially, he's got a chance to be lottery pick one day. He loves the game. What I like about him is he rebounds. At that size, he rebounds, runs the court and is a physical guy."
Schilling is Michigan State's first Class of 2013 recruit.
