National-winning jockey remains in hospital
NEWCASTLE, England -- Grand National-winning jockey Ryan Mania will spend a second night in a hospital as he awaits medical clearance to return home after hurting his neck and back in a fall from a horse.
The 23-year-old rider fell during a race in Hexham, northern England on Sunday -- a day after winning the National -- and was airlifted to a hospital in nearby Newcastle.
Mania's agent, Bruce Jeffrey, says in a statement on Monday that the jockey "is waiting for a final MRI scan to give him the all-clear and allow him to return home."
Mania rode 66-1 shot Auroras Encore to victory in the world's toughest jumps race at Aintree on Saturday.
