Snedeker falls flat on Sunday

AUGUSTA, Ga., -- Brandt Snedeker is considered one of the best putters on the PGA Tour, but on Sunday he couldn't solve the riddle of the greens at Augusta National.

The 32-year-old Nashville native had a bitterly disappointing 3-over 75 in the final round to finish in a tie for sixth after starting the day in a tie for the lead with Angel Cabrera, who eventually fell to champion Adam Scott on the second playoff hole.

On Sunday, Snedeker went to the back nine two shots off the lead. But then his putter failed him. He never recovered after crucial short missed putts at 10 and 11.

Brandt Snedeker bogeyed four of his final nine holes for a final-round 75 and a sixth-place finish.

Most players on Sunday complained of the slowness of the usually very fast greens at Augusta National.

"I couldn't get the ball to the hole," was a familiar refrain voiced by the players.

And on this day, perhaps only Cabrera and Scott were able to fully understand the perils of these complex greens that were softened by rain in the late afternoon.

"I really actually played pretty well," Snedeker said. "The greens really messed me up. I was so used to how fast they were yesterday and I left every putt short out there today. I could not get a putt to the hole.

"I did not do a good job of making adjustments and I'm disappointed. I was there for one reason, to win, and I didn't do it."

When Snedeker was in this same position in 2008, he broke down in tears, because he said he didn't know at the time if he would ever make it back onto the leaderboard at the Masters.

"I know this golf course so well and I putted about as poorly as I could today and I still had a chance on the back nine," he said. "So I'm very disappointed that I didn't win, but I realize that I'm not that far off from winning this thing. I'm going to do it soon.

"Any time have you a chance to win the Masters and you don't come through, my lifelong dream, you're going to be upset, you're going to cry, you know, but I'll get through it."
