Brother of Cubs' Epstein ran Boston Marathon

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein says his twin brother finished running the Boston Marathon about 45 minutes before the two explosions near the finish line.

Epstein spent nearly a decade as general manager of the Boston Red Sox. Earlier this week at Wrigley Field, he said his mother ran in the marathon "at least a half-dozen times."

Three people were killed and more than 180 were injured in Monday's bombings. The 39-year-old Epstein says he spoke to his brother, Paul, within 20 minutes of hearing about the explosions.

"You see the darkest side of humanity with someone wanting to harm innocent people," Epstein said. "Then you see the best side of humanity, too, when you see people running toward an explosion like that to help out people who are in harm's way."
