However bland the end result, naming the College Football Playoff was the easy part. Now come the more difficult questions in forming the game's four-team playoff, writes Mark Schlabach. Story
BCS commissioners discussed Wednesday whether the bowl could only go by a corporation name as part of the six semifinal bowl rotation.
"They [the commissioners] want [the bowl names] to be parallel," College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock said.
ESPN first reported Wednesday the bowl may have to change names.
"What everyone is wrestling with is the fact Chick-fil-A has been associated with the game for (17 years)," a source told ESPN. "There's been a debate whether to grandfather in the name or it has to carry some other moniker."
BCS officials approached Chick-fil-A Bowl officials twice in the past year and indicated they might have to change the name, sources said.
The Chick-fil-A Peach will be one of the six semifinal sites along with the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton and Fiesta Bowls.
The Chick-fil-A Peach and Fiesta Bowls will host the national semifinals on Dec. 31, 2016; Dec. 31, 2019; Dec. 31, 2022; and Dec. 31, 2025.
