TPC Sawgrass soaked, tourney nears

TPC Sawgrass, home to next week's Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., has received 5 inches of rain the past two days, so much so that half the walkway leading to the back of one of golf's signature holes -- the par-3 island 17th -- was under water Friday.
The bridge leading to the famed island green at TPC Sawgrass was partly submerged by water on Friday after rain pounded the venue that hosts next week's Players Championship.
The course will be closed to the public Monday to allow it to recover from the intake of rain, which has saturated the venue.
PGA Tour officials announced Friday that the tournament will honor tickets for Tuesday's practice round. Players still will be permitted to use the facilities in preparation for the tour's signature event, which has a $9.5 million purse.
The tour said in a statement that it wanted to "minimize any damage that would affect the competition and give the course maintenance team as much time as possible to prepare the golf course once the storm conditions subside."
The 72-hole tournament begins Thursday.
Adam Scott is scheduled to play for the first time since winning the Masters in a playoff over Angel Cabrera. Tiger Woods and defending champion Matt Kuchar also are set to play.
