Sosa edges Segura in title eliminator
ZITACUARO, Mexico -- Edgar Sosa stayed on the fast track to a title shot on Saturday night when he outpointed fellow Mexican Giovani Segura at the Plaza de Toros Eloy Cavazos to keep hope alive for a bout with flyweight titlist Akira Yaeshagi.
All three judges scored it for Sosa (115-112, 114-113 and 116-112), who recorded his sixth straight victory since a 2011 defeat against Pongsaklek Wonjongkam. The 33-year-old native of Mexico City improved to 49-7 with 29 KOs.
The fight, which headlined a card set in a bullfighting arena, opened with the former champion Segura (29-3-1, 25 KOs), 31, looking for a knockout against the boxing and defense of Sosa, who utilized combination punching. Sosa held off a rally from Segura in the middle rounds by sending him to the ropes with combinations that ultimately helped him sway the judges.
Segura suffered his second defeat in his last three fights, including an eighth-round TKO loss against Brian Viloria in 2011.
