Mike Goodson impresses Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Mike Goodson was on the field for the New York Jets on Thursday, catching a pass from Greg McElroy and getting time with both Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith.

The running back was quick-footed and beat defenders up the sideline on one play, clearly demonstrating what prompted the Jets to sign Goodson this offseason.

"We do our due diligence, so I'm sure we know about all of our players -- not just Mike, but all of our players," Jets coach Rex Ryan said.

That due diligence should have uncovered legal issues stemming from unpaid bills and paternity issues, which ESPN New York detailed last week. But those are issues that Ryan refused to address in his first news  conference since the details of Goodson's past came to light.

"I'm not really comfortable talking about the young man's past and all that," Ryan said.

Those are separate issues from Goodson's current legal troubles.

The former Oakland Raider was arrested after being found non-responsive in the passenger seat of a car stopped in the middle of Route 80 in New Jersey. The car contained marijuana, paraphernalia and a gun loaded with hollow-point bullets. Goodson was charged with possession of both drugs and an illegal weapon, as was the driver of the car, Garant Evans.

Goodson has plead not guilty. If found guilty of the charges stemming from the gun and/or bullets, he could face at least three years in prison.

Goodson, who declined to address the media Thursday, is next due in court June 12. In the meantime, Goodson has spent the week in OTAs with his new team.

"I haven't seen anything that would indicate that [he is distracted]," Ryan said.

The Jets will wait to see what happens with the legal proceedings before taking any disciplinary action, but he could face penalties from the team and the NFL if found guilty of any of the charges.

However, the upside to the considerable risk of adding Goodson could be seen as the team practiced at the Jets facility.

"You see the speed that he has," Ryan said. "That's what jumps out at me anyway. He had the ball in the open field a couple times, and you see the acceleration that he has. That's been impressive."
