The Brooklyn Nets have contacted Jeff Van Gundy about their coaching vacancy, a league source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.

No interview has been set up, the source said.

Talks with Van Gundy were "awhile ago and just preliminary," a source told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard.

The Nets previously had reached out to Phil Jackson about the vacancy, but the 11-time champion told the team he was not interested. Brooklyn also was rebuffed by the Boston Celtics in its attempt to gain permission to talk with Doc Rivers, who still has three years left on his contract.

Van Gundy, an ESPN NBA analyst, also has been contacted by the Los Angeles Clippers about their coaching vacancy, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard and ESPNLosAngeles.com's Ramona Shelbourne on Thursday.

The Nets are in search of a replacement for P.J. Carlesimo, but are in no rush, people familiar with their coaching search told ESPNNewYork.com recently.

The news was earlier reported by NBA writer Mark Heisler of SheridanHoops.com.
