Sylvestre wins re-entry Event 3

The 2013 World Series of Poker has started off strong. Just days before the start of the Millionaire Maker, Event 3 -- the $1,000 re-entry event -- began on Thursday and offered two starting flights. The Rio was packed and the lines were long, as an astounding 3,164 entries created a massive prize pool capped off by the victory of Charles Sylvestre worth $491,360.

A re-entry event allows players who are eliminated in one flight to have a second chance at the tournament. Sylvestre entered the event only once.

Charles Sylvestre
Charles Sylvestre, a recreational poker player from Quebec, captured his first WSOP bracelet.

Sylvestre, a real estate broker from Saint Bruno, Quebec, recorded a six-figure score during the Spring Championship of Online Poker and decided to make a 10-day trip to Vegas for the WSOP. Accompanied by 2010 WSOP main event champion Jonathan Duhamel on his rail, he defeated his final table opposition in just under four hours to record his third career WSOP cash and first victory in this event.

"Half a million dollars is very nice, that's for sure," said Sylvestre to the WSOP after his win. "I don't know what I'll do with it yet, make some investments and play some more tournaments. The bracelet means more, but the cash is amazing, for sure."

Entering the final table among the leaders, Sylvestre was an observer during the eliminations of Ping Liu, Ruben Ybarra and Darren Rabinowitz in ninth through seventh, respectively. Ryan Olisar amazingly made the final table of this event for the second consecutive year, but his quest for gold was cut short in sixth, as Sylvestre's 4-4 held over Olisar's A-J. Calculating his results from only these two events, Olisar has earned $336,838. He has six career WSOP cashes.

Sylvestre's pivotal hand came during four-handed play. With nearly even stacks, Michael Cooper three-bet, Sylvestre four-bet and Cooper called. After a Q-9-7 flop, all the chips found their way to the center with Sylvestre in the lead holding A-A. Cooper flipped over 10-8 and needed to hit his straight draw to survive. The turn Q and river 2 eliminated Cooper in fourth. This was only his fourth career WSOP cash, but Cooper is a staple on the WSOP circuit and has a total of $244,937 in earnings over the past three years.

Seth Berger held the top stack for three-handed play with Sylvestre and William Guerrero looking for an opening. Guerrero, making his first WSOP cash, was in a good position to get back into the match, all-in with 9-9 against Sylvestre's A-4. The flop of A-4-6 decimated his chances and without hitting a nine, he was eliminated in third place for $215,107. Sylvestre's aggression proved to be the difference maker during heads-up play versus Berger, as in only a few hands he had pushed around his opponent with numerous all-ins. On the final hand, Sylvestre bet all three streets and moved all-in on a A-K-3-10-8 board. Berger called for his tournament life and mucked after Sylvestre showed A-J which beat his K-2.

"It feels amazing. It's my first WSOP final table, my first bracelet," said Sylvestre. "I had two of my friends here with me cheering, including the world champion."

"Big congrats @chilaxchuck pour le bracelet!!!!! #onemoreforquebec #hero #chuckster," said Duhamel, who was providing live updates of the final table on Twitter.

Including Daniel Negreanu's win at WSOP-APAC, Canadians own two of the eight bracelets awarded thus far in 2013.

Other notable finishers include Nam Le (17th), Scott Seiver (33rd) and Ravi Raghavan (46th).
