Padres put Jedd Gyorko on DL
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres placed rookie second baseman Jedd Gyorko on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a right groin strain and reinstated infielder Logan Forsythe from the 60-day DL.
To make room for Forsythe on the 40-man roster, the Padres designated catcher John Baker for assignment Monday.
Gyorko is hitting .284 with eight home runs and 25 RBIs. He has made 51 starts at second base and nine at third. He leads all rookies in batting average, hits (66), runs (36) and total bases (107) while ranking tied for the lead in doubles (17) and second in home runs and RBIs.
Gyorko was hurt in a loss Sunday at Colorado.
"I thought it was a cramp at first," Gyorko said before the Padres played the Atlanta Braves. "It kind of felt like cramp when I slid into second. I was able to get off the field, but it really tightened up then. Even up until right about the time the game ended I thought it was still a cramp.
"It's tough. You obviously want to be out there, especially since we've been playing well. But it's part of it. Just have to put the time in and make sure it's 100 percent."
Forsythe was placed on the 15-day DL before the season with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 24.
Baker was optioned to Triple-A Tucson on May 28.
