Duval leaves rail with Event 28 win

Even if he's not the one at the table, 2010 WSOP main event champion Jonathan Duhamel is making a lot of appearances in winner's photos these days. Just weeks after standing beside Charles-Andrew Sylvestre, Duhamel was back on the rail at the feature table cheering on 23-year-old student Jason Duval who became the record-setting seventh Canadian champion of the 2013 WSOP. Duval was side-by-side with Duhamel during Sylvestre's final table and couldn't imagine being the center of attention so soon after. With 30-40 people cheering him on to victory, he smiled with pride and enjoyed the very special moment.

Jason Duval
Jason Duval became the seventh Canadian champion at the 2013 WSOP.

"It feels great to win a big tournament and get a bracelet," said Duval to the WSOP. "It's great for Quebec. I feel really great."

Duval earned $521,202 for the victory. This was his fourth career WSOP cash, his third of the 2013 Series.

"I really wanted to win this," he said. "I had come close in (an EPT) event. So, this time I wanted to win it because I had so many people here cheering for me. I didn't want to let them down."

The past 15 months have been filled with success for the part-time player who remains dedicated to earning his degree in business. He's made two final tables on the WPT, an eighth-place finish on the EPT and now a WSOP victory.

According to the WSOP, Duval needed 174 hands to defeat the nine-handed final table. Duval only gained true control of the effort during heads-up play while his opponent Majid Yahyaei sat on top of the chip counts for most of the day. On the final hand, Duval's opponent Majid Yahyaei made a bold decision to call of his stack with Q-2 after a Ac-Kd-7d flop and was up against the queen-high flush draw and was drawing to only two outs. The turn and river were blanks for Yahyaei and Duval was crowned the Event 28 champion.

Finishing in seventh place was Dan Martin, better known to the poker world as "Wretchy." This was his first WSOP final table and seventh WSOP cash.

Other notable finishers include T.J. Cloutier (13th), Eoghan O'Dea (23rd) and Olivier Busquet (26th).
