CHICAGO -- Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews did not play in the third period of Chicago's 3-1 victory in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals against the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

Coach Joel Quenneville said after the game that Toews suffered an upper-body injury and the team will check on him tomorrow.

"We're hopeful [he can play] next game," Quenneville said. "We'll see how he is [Sunday.]"

Toews hit his head on the ice after taking a hit from Boston Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk late in the second period. A source said the league is taking a look at Boychuk's hit.

Boychuk said he wasn't concerned about a hearing.

"I came across and read it and hit him," Boychuk said. "I tried to hit him clean and I thought it was. I don't know how he fell. I'm going to try and play physical and he's going to drive the net like he's supposed to and I'm going to hit.

"I'm pretty sure it was clean."

Toews was unavailable to speak with the media after the game, according to a team spokesperson.

Toews played 18 shifts and saw 12:56 of ice time. He sat on the bench throughout the third period.

"I checked on him a couple times there," Quenneville said. "I think he wanted to play."

Patrick Sharp said the team appreciated its captain's presence.

"He didn't get a shift, but he was there to chatter a little bit on the bench and keep us into it," Sharp said of Toews.

Before leaving, Toews recorded assists on both of Patrick Kane's goals. He has two goals and 10 assists in 22 playoff games this season.

Toews missed the final 22 games of the 2011-12 regular season because of a concussion. Quenneville deflected a question about whether Toew's injury is concussion-related.

"We're just hoping that he's going to be ready to play," Quenneville responded. "We'll see how he is. We're hopeful he can play."
