CHICAGO -- Police arrested a man carrying two handguns near City Hall during the Chicago Blackhawks' Stanley Cup parade Friday, according to a police department spokesman.

"Officers arrested a man in the Loop today after noticing that he was acting suspiciously," Chicago Police Department director of news affairs Adam Collins wrote in an email Friday. "He admitted to having a handgun in his pocket, and a search revealed a second handgun in his backpack. As we made clear prior to today's events, police would be doing searches of large bags and backpacks, and this arrest is a clear example of the effectiveness of those efforts."

Collins said, based on the conversations the detectives had with the offender, there is no indication he was planning anything. The parade route ran near City Hall down Washington Street.

The mayor's press office released a statement that an estimated 2 million-plus people celebrated the Blackhawks' parade and Grant Park rally on Friday.

"Chicago fans came out today in true form," the city's release said. "Estimates of both parade routes and the rally show that the crowd was even larger than 2010, with more than 2 million people attending the celebration for the 2013 Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks."

Collins said the parade and rally were peaceful events, and he was unaware of any other significant incidents.
