Rain interrupts X Games Munich

MUNICH -- Heavy rains at the Olympic Park on Saturday forced the cancellation of Moto X Freestyle at X Games Munich due to adverse course conditions. It's been a disappointing year for athletes and fans in one of the X Games' most popular events: Moto X Freestyle was also canceled last month at X Games Barcelona.

"It's really disappointing not to be able to ride freestyle due to weather, especially two events in a row," said Nate Adams, a two-time Moto X Freestyle gold medalist who has battled back from injuries and was expected to be a favorite in this week's competition. "I always work very hard to prepare for these contests and not being able to perform for my fans frustrates me. I'd like to say a special thank you to all the fans in Munich who came out and waited in the rain for us to ride. Hopefully we can come back next year and ride for you all."

Weather delays on Saturday also forced the postponement of the Skateboard Big Air and Men's and Women's Enduro X finals, which will now be held on Sunday, weather permitting. The live webcast from the Enduro X finals is now scheduled to air at 10:30 a.m. ET, followed by Skateboard Big Air at 12:30 p.m. ET.

"It just is what it is. It's nature so you just go with it," said six-time Skateboard Big Air gold medalist Bob Burnquist. "You can't skate in the rain, so that's that. The wind was a little weird, too, so even if it had dried it up it wasn't the best conditions. You want to make it safe, and tomorrow looks like a better deal. A day to rest right before the competition could actually be a blessing in disguise."

Burnquist said rain and wind have been an issue all week as he and his competitors have been trying to squeeze in practice sessions.

"We've lost a few boards in the water (sliding into the nearby lake) this week, and Jake Brown took a bad fall yesterday and was knocked unconscious," he said. "The bottom line is that MegaRamp skateboarding is intense, emotionally and physically, and you've got to make these calls sometimes."

The Olympic Stadium venue for the Enduro X and Moto X Freestyle events -- originally built to host the opening and closing ceremonies for the 1972 Summer Olympics –- was also deemed too rainy and muddy to proceed on Saturday.

The first of this weekend's two rounds of RallyCross competition (a makeup date for the canceled X Games Barcelona race) was held earlier in the day on Saturday, making for a spectacular mess with cars sliding out left and right as British driver Liam Doran piloted his way to a gold medal in a Mini with a blown left rear tire.

Local weather forecasts are predicting a 10 percent chance of rain for Sunday. Other events previously scheduled for Sunday include finals for the new Mountain Bike Slopestyle competition, Street League Skateboarding and a second round of RallyCross racing.
