Arizona Cardinals quarterbacks coach Freddie Kitchens has been cleared for training camp less than seven weeks after undergoing emergency heart surgery.

"Freddie is doing great," Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Monday. "Doctors have cleared him to come to work. It's amazing. He hit a hurdle last week and cleared it. He really looks good, sounds good and he's on a treadmill two or three times a day."

Kitchens, 38, experienced chest pains during a June 4 practice. An examination showed a defect in his aorta. The team hoped he would be able to return sometime during camp but he has beaten those expectations.

The Cardinals will hold most of their camp practices indoors at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., out of the sweltering desert heat. The team will take the heat into consideration when setting Kitchens' workload, including when the team holds practices outdoors.

"I'm not going to let him go outside in the heat the first two days," Arians said. "I'm going to wait 'til Glendale for him to go on the field. But he is ready to go."

Arians and assistant head coach Tom Moore have been handling Kitchens' duties in his absence.
