The Steelers said via their Twitter account that Burress suffered a significant shoulder injury in Thursday's practice.

A source familiar with the injury told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Burress has a torn rotator cuff, an injury that could end his season.

He was hurt in practice when he landed awkwardly on his right arm while trying to make a catch over defensive backs Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith and Ryan Steed.

Burress was battling Jerricho Cotchery, David Gilreath and rookies Markus Wheaton and Justin Brown for a spot behind starters Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders.

Burress, who will turn 36 next week, had three receptions in four games with the Steelers last season.

In 11 NFL seasons with the Steelers, New York Giants and New York Jets, Burress has 553 receptions for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns.
