Jason Vargas activated from DL

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Angels pitcher Jason Vargas is making his return after having surgery to remove a blood clot in his left armpit.

The left-hander has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and is set to start against the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. He is 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA in his first season with Los Angeles.

Vargas will be making his first start since June 17. A few days before that outing he noticed temperature differences in his pitching hand. It was caused by circulation problems due to the clot. The surgery was performed June 26.

Manager Mike Scioscia expects Vargas to be able to throw about 80-85 pitches.

To make room for Vargas, the Angels optioned right-hander Tommy Hanson to Triple-A Salt Lake. Hanson was 4-3 with a 5.59 ERA in 13 starts.
