2 jockeys hospitalized after spills at Monmouth
OCEANPORT, N.J. -- Two jockeys have been sent to the hospital after their mounts unseated them at Monmouth Park on Saturday.
Francisco Maysonett sustained a possible mild concussion when he was thrown during the fifth race. Maysonett was aboard Our Corn, who was between horses nearing the far turn, when his mount clipped heels and unseated him.
Track medical director Angelo Chinnici says Maysonett briefly lost consciousness and had a few chipped teeth. Maysonett was sent to a hospital for evaluation, but Chinnici says he "anticipates a quick recovery" for the jockey.
In the 12th race, Jose Ferrer was unseated when his mount, No Veggies, broke down just moments after she took the lead at the top of the stretch. The filly was humanely euthanized on the racetrack.
Chinnici says Ferrer had shortness of breath, multiple soft tissue injuries and a possible concussion. He was taken to the hospital for X-rays and observation.
