MINNEAPOLIS -- The Kansas City Royals optioned pitchers Wade Davis and Louis Coleman to Class A Wilmington on Wednesday to make room for Danny Duffy and Luke Hochevar.
By sending Davis and Coleman to Class A, the Royals can recall them by Tuesday since Wilmington finishes its regular season on Monday and likely won't make the postseason.
Players optioned to the minors must remain there for 10 days, but that rule doesn't apply if the minor league club finishes its season.
Duffy is replacing the struggling Davis in the rotation and started Wednesday night's game against Minnesota. Hochevar returns from three days of paternity leave and has a 1.93 ERA in 44 games out of the bullpen.
