Brandon Browner, Cliff Avril out

CHARLOTTE -- Seattle Seahawks starting cornerback Brandon Browner and defensive end Cliff Avril will not play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. Both were game-day decisions because of hamstring injuries.

Both Browner and Avril came on the field three hours before kickoff and worked out running drills. But apparently the coaches felt neither player was ready to play, and both were placed on the inactive list.

Browner was listed as questionable and Avril was doubtful on Friday.

Avril was Seattle's top offseason acquisition on defense as a free agent from Detroit. He was viewed as the rush end/linebacker who could upgrade the Seahawks' pass rush. But Avril did not play in the preseason after missing most of camp with a foot injury, and later the hamstring problem.

Browner played in all four preseason games and didn't miss any camp time, but injured his hamstring in practice earlier this week.

Walter Thurmond and Byron Maxwell will split time in Browner's spot. Thurmond also is the Seahawks' nickel back.

O'Brien Schofield, who played for the Arizona Cardinals the previous three seasons before signing with Seattle, will start at a defensive end spot for the Seahawks.
