Pirates starter Morton leaves game with injury

Associated Press

ST. LOUIS -- Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton left with an apparent injury in the second inning Sunday at St. Louis.

Morton had allowed five runs on six hits and walking two in 1 1-2 innings before manager Clint Hurdle came to the mound. He left after throwing a wild pitch that bounced just in front of the left-handed batter's box, allowing Jon Jay to score and give the Cardinals a 5-0 lead. He threw 46 pitches.

Stolmy Pimentel came in relief and struck out Yadier Molina to end the inning.

Morton hadn't surrendered more than two runs since the Cardinals tagged him for five in a 13-0 victory on Aug. 1 in Pittsburgh. He went on to win his next three decisions over five starts, which included a no-decision after giving up two runs in seven innings on Aug. 13 at St. Louis.
